Assessor faces felony for stealing township funds

MACON COUNTY — Authorities say a Decatur woman admitted stealing thousands of dollars from her employers. They say she was using the money to buy prescription drugs.

Police say Tricia Napier stole nearly $70,000 from Whitmore and Oakley townships where she worked as an assessor. Officials say some of her coworkers contacted them to report some of the losses.

Authorities say they made an attempt to contact her, but she turned herself in Thursday. Police say Napier told them the money paid for prescription pain medication.

People in Whitmore Township say it’s not something they would have expected to hear about. According to the Oakley Township website, Napier has worked for both townships since April 2014.

She faces a felony charge for stealing government property. She was released on bail Thursday.
