Much like a handcrafted patchwork quilt, the Amish and “English” (non-Amish) communities are woven together in everything they do—shop together, go to school together, work together.
Come experience for yourself the rich history and proud tradition of the Arthur area Amish. It will undoubtedly give you a whole new appreciation for the simpler things in life.
The Arthur Amish Country Area covers approximately 64 square miles located primarily in Douglas and Moultrie Counties in central Illinois. The Village of Arthur has approximately 2,300 residents, which are surrounded by approximately 4,500 Amish residents. The residences and businesses of the Amish are primarily located throughout the countryside in the Arthur Area. You will have a lot to observe, hear and experience as you move throughout the entire area. We encourage you to spend time in downtown Arthur visiting the many shops and businesses located in our bustling downtown.
Visitors will then want to take a short trip to the country to actually observe the Amish as they go about their daily lives. As you visit, please respect the culture of the Amish by not taking their picture. You may take pictures of Amish “things,” but please refrain from including Amish people in your photographs.
Before you visit the downtown or countryside, you should stop by the Arthur Amish Country Welcome Center located at 106 E. Progress Street. At this location you will be able to gather information, directions and suggestions on where to visit and what to see.
