Transport program provides independence for seniors

Being able to drive to a doctors appointment or the grocery store is something you might take for granted. However, for many seniors in Central Illinois, transportation can be a big cause for concern. It is the reason a program provided by Family Service of Champaign County is making a big difference for those over the age of 60.

The Senior Transportation program provides rides to seniors free of charge. The program is run through volunteers, how donate their time to help drive around the county. For program volunteers like Evelyn Lee and her son Justin, it is an opportunity to become close to those you serve. Each week they drive an Urbana woman to her dialysis appointment.

“They become more than just someone you are taking somewhere. They become a family member you feel like. It is like their family becomes your family.” says Evelyn Lee

The Senior Transportation program is in need of additional volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering, you can call 217-352-5100.
