Thomas Rees Memorial Carillon

If you take a walk around Washington Park in Springfield, a certain sound may capture your attention. Throughout the year, the Thomas Rees Memorial Carillon plays music which echoes throughout the capitol city. As one of the largest carillons in the world, its 67 bells produce an unmistakable sound.

At the helm of the carillon is Carlo Van Ulft, a native of the Netherlands, who has been playing carillons in the United States for nearly 20 years. He says that over the years the carillon has come to be identified as a local landmark.

“The tower has become a monument for the Springfield residents, its one of the landmarks like the state capitol is.” says Van Ulft.

The Thomas Rees Memorial Carillon offers tours to the public throughout the year and holds concerts on Wednesday nights. For more information about the carillon, you can visit their website.
