Lovington man recycles plastic barrels into giant sunflowers

ciLiving

A central Illinois man is finding a unique way to turn trash into treasure. Gary Smith has always enjoyed sunflowers, but knows that they only bloom for a brief time in the summer. It is the reason he set out to create one that would last all year long. He found success by using old industrial plastic barrels.

“It started off with just a challenge to see if I could do it. After about 350 it is starting to be a job.” jokes Smith

By cutting the barrels into pieces, bolting them together, and painting them, he is able to create beautiful giant sunflowers. It is something he says is a way to brighten people’s days while helping to recycle.
