Local Brewery “Goes Green” Thanks to Solar Power Initiative

Enjoying a pint of beer is a simple pleasure many people enjoy. Knowing that the beer was brewed in an environmentally friendly way helps to make the drink all the more enjoyable.

Urbana- based Riggs Beer Company recently installed two large solar arrays on their property. It allows them to power the brewery using the sun rather than relying on the traditional electrical utility. In an industry where energy consumption can be large, Riggs wanted to take an innovate approach to address two challenges.

“Minimizing our impact on the environment was a priority for us. Plus it helps save money on our electric bill and made sense.” says Riggs Beer Company Co-owner Darin Riggs

Brewing using solar power is a growing trend among craft breweries nationwide. Well known breweries such as Sierra Nevada have installed solar arrays, as well as other local breweries like Big Thorn in Georgetown.
