Hope Begins with The Cunningham Childrens Home and the Festival of Quilts

ciLiving

Cunningham Children’s Home will host the 15th Annual Festival of Quilts on Friday, April 5 and Saturday, April 6 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., in the Spiritual Life Center on the Cunningham campus in Urbana. The Festival is Cunningham’s signature fundraiser and honors the tradition of the United Methodist Women, and the quilts they, and quilters from across Illinois, have donated for our kids formore than 123 years.

Every youth who lives at Cunningham, receives their very own quilt when they leave to remind them of the love, comfort and hope they foundat Cunningham!

The Festival includes a collection of show quilts that creatively blur the lines between conventional quilt making and fine art. Quilts of all sizes are available to purchase through our quilt auction and quilt boutique. Participants may also enjoy home-baked goods from the bakesale, lunch at the Patchwork Café, and handcrafted items from the gift shop.

Admission to the Festival is a suggested donation of $5 perperson and all proceeds will benefit children and youth served by Cunningham.

Last year Cunningham served 520 youth and their families through 3 main programs: Residential Treatment, Special Education and Community Services. Many of the youth we serve have experienced abuse, trauma, and neglect at the hands of adults they should have been able to trust. Our youth in residential live with us 24/7 and come to us after having an average of 5-7 other placements and disruptions. They display psychological and behavioral disorders as a result of the repetitive, prolonged trauma involving sustained abuse or abandonment by a caregiver. Cunningham responds with a community of highly skilled, caring staff who listen to and work with our youth to provide a therapeutic environment for them to heal, learn and grow.

Cunningham provides hope and healing for youth and their families struggling with serious emotional and behavioral challenges. Most of our youth are between the ages of 11-17 and 66% are boys. Majority of the youth we serve come from within a 2 hour radius of CU.
