Champaign Woman Honored for World’s Best Honey

Across the United States, there are estimated to be more than 5,000 beekeepers, however only one is able to hold the title of having the best tasting honey in the world. Rachel Coventry of Champaign is the rare person who is able to hold such a unique title.

“I was completely shocked that it won overall the best tasting honey in the world and I read the announcement several times because I couldn’t believe what I was reading.” Says Coventry.

Rachel has been raising bees at Curtis Orchard in Champaign for decades alongside her grandfather, Paul Curtis. Late last year she submitted a sample of honey to the Center for Honeybee Research in North Carolina as part of a blind taste-test contest. Getting the news that she won was something she credits not just to hard work, but to the variety of plants her bees have to feed on, which she says contributes to the flavor.
