Alpha & Papillon to Hit the Big Screen

ciLiving

A remake of a classic adventure film and a prehistoric tale are on area screens this week. Film critics, Chuck Koplinski and Pam Powell, are back with their review.

Alpha

An epic adventure set in the last Ice Age, tells a fascinating, visually stunning story that shines a light on the origins of man’s best friend. A standard dog-and-his-boy story, the prehistoric setting is unique and rendered well.  Unfortunately, the story has nothing in the way of surprises. 2 Stars (Chuck Koplinski) Rated PG-13. 96 minutes. AMC-C, AMC-D, SAV.

Papillon

This remake of the Steve McQueen classic offers up Charlie Hunnam in the role of jewel thief Henri Charrière who undertakes a series of escapes to free himself from the oppressive French penal system.  As harrowing as the original, the film benefits from a more streamlined approach and its depiction of the horrendous conditions Charriere and Louis Dega (Rami Malek) were forced to endure. 3 ½ Stars (Chuck Koplinski) Rated R. 133 minutes. AMC-C, AMC-D, SAV.

A big CONGRATS to Pam Powell as she was made a member of Rotten Tomatoes and the Broadcast Film Critics Association this week!
