One staff member at the University of Illinois is taking a unique approach when it comes to being in touch with her students. Rachel Switzky, Director of the Siebel Center for Design, has converted an empty office space into a dorm room. The room is complete with retired dorm furniture and the touches of home that many new undergraduate students bring with them.
Switzky, who first came to the University of Illinois as a freshman in 1988, says that creating the space allows her to feel in touch with today’s students.
“For me as a new educator on campus, this was a way for me to immerse myself in a student experience. This is one big milestone moving into the dorms and trying see what the experience was like.” says Switzky
Switzky says the dorm-office has received a positive response from both faculty and students on campus.
