Safe sleeping habits for Babies and Infants


We’re hearing a lot in the news about the recent recall of Fisher Price’s Rock ‘n Play Sleeper following reports of infant deaths. Parents want to be sure they are keeping up to date on the latest news and tips to keep their children safe.


What is safe sleep?

  • Ways to protect your baby
  • Reduces sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)
  • Less likely to have choking or suffocation


How much should baby be sleeping?

  • Newborns sleep about 16 hours a day (3-4 hours at a time)
  • By about 4 months, babies may start to sleep 10 to 12 hours at night with longer naps during the day
  • Ideal to keep the area clear and at a comfortable temperature about 70 degrees
  • Dress them in a light sleep clothes without any strings or ties


Where should your baby sleep?

  • On their back
  • Flat and firm surface
  • Free from bumpers, bedding or stuffed animals
  • Don’t use cribs with drop-side rails


What about co-sleeping or room sharing? Is this safe?

  • Room sharing is encouraged. Not only is it safe, it’s ideal for the first 6 months to 1 year
  • Easier to feed, comfort and watch your baby
  • Co-sleeping or bed sharing (with baby in the bed with you) isn’t’ recommended
    •    Not idea for very young or underweight babies
    •    If parents smoke, should not have baby in bed with them
    •    Potential for rolling over onto baby
    •    Our beds tend to be softer have pillows and blankets and other hazards for baby
