Mushroom Hunting is Tradition for Vermilion County Woman

For Becky Low, each trip deep into the woods of Vermilion County is like embarking on a new adventure. It is a routine she has practiced for decades as she heads out to a top secret location to search for morel mushrooms. While it may not be a hobby some are familiar with, it is something she has been doing for as long as she can remember.

“I was four years old when I first started hunting mushrooms. My grandad Floyd said lets go mushroom hunting, he lived in the country, gave me a big paper sack and said well go fill this.” says Low

Ever since her first mushroom hunting trip, Low has been hooked. The mushroom hunting season, which lasts from April through early June, provides prime opportunities to find the prized morels. However, Low says it is important to remain a bit tight lipped about where the best places are to find them.
