Now that spring is officially here, it’s time for a burst of activities as we finish spring break and head into the month of April.
With a late Easter this year, some of our normal April events are happening a little earlier!
In conjunction with the University of Illinois Mom’s Weekend, the arts and culture of Champaign County will be on display starting today when the annual Boneyard Arts Festival takes over the county. Over 100 venues will showcase the talents of hundreds local artists. Events and demonstrations will happen at a variety of venues from Campustown on Thursday, Champaign on Friday, Urbana on Saturday and other countywide events on Sunday. There’s no better way to appreciate and support the artists who make Champaign County a special place to live.
But the chaos that weekend doesn’t end there, it’s also Mom’s Weekend at the University. This weekend brings a variety of great events from an Open House at the Japan House, the annual flower show on April 6 at the Stock Pavillion, the Craft Fair at the Illini Union, and a variety of concerts across the campus.
We head from there right into the 21st year of Ebertfest where we’ll welcome Richard Roeper for this year’s festival. It will kick off on April 10 and go through the 13th at the Virginia Theatre. The opening night film, Amazing Grace, is a film concert of the queen of soul, Aretha Franklin, and it will be followed by a live performance from the local Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Choir of Champaign Urbana. The full line-up is out, with guests announced like Jennifer Tilly, Gina Gershon, and Virginia Madsen.
Also happening that weekend, Krannert Center for the Performing Arts will officially celebrate their 50th Year with their Come Home to Krannert Center 50th Anniversary Weekend. A variety of panel discussions, performances and receptions will happen on Friday and Saturday, followed by a performance from this year’s debut artist, a saxophonist, Wilson Poffenberger, on Sunday. It will be an Outside of Ordinary way to celebrate this incredible facility that has provided our community with arts & culture for half a century.
As we head into the last two weeks of April, we’ll have Easter Egg hunts all across the county for kids (and some for adults too!) before it’s race weekend. Be prepared for the 11th year of the Christie Clinic Illinois Marathon taking over Champaign-Urbana with over 18,000 runners over the course of the weekend. There’s still time to register or volunteer!
