Illinois at 200: Mule Boat Ride Down the I & M Canal

ciLiving

In 2018, the idea of taking a ride on a boat pulled by mules seems like quite a novelty. However, during the first half of the 19th century, it was a necessity if you wanted to travel or ship goods from Illinois to areas along the Mississippi River or Gulf of Mexico.

More than 150 years later, people today can still get a taste of what this unique journey used to be like by heading the the I & M Canal in La Salle. They offer an opportunity to interact with living history.
