Lightning McQueen (voice by Owen Wilson) sets out to prove to a new generation of racers that he’s still the best racecar in the world. Putting the dismal “cars 2” in its rearview mirror, this entry returns the franchise to its roots, concentrating on the relationships between Lightning and his old friends as well as his new, mentor Smokey (Chris Cooper) and protégée Cruz Ramirez (Cristela Alonzo). This examination of middle age and the value of knowing when it’s time to pull into the pits for the last time has enough laughs for the kids and narrative meat for the adults they drag to the movies. 3 ½ Stars (Chuck Koplinski) Rated G. 109 minutes.
