A modern kitchen, laundry room, and cozy den are all things you likely would not be surprised to find inside any new home in Central Illinois. However, if you learned that all these things were neatly packed in just 260 square feet of living space, it might come as a surprise.
It is a surprise that Byron Denhart, founder of Urbana-based Switchgrass Tiny Homes, knew would garner some attention in Central Illinois and beyond. It’s the reason he and his wife founded Switchgrass in 2016 and built a prototype home which now travels to home shows around the country.
“We’ve always been HGTV watchers, watched all the shows and always had an interest in tiny homes and did a lot of research on it.” Says Denhart.
While Switchgrass Tiny Homes is working to attract customers nationally, Denhart says he hopes that having a locally based tiny home manufacturer will help increase interest in the concept here in Central Illinois. In order to make that happen, he says that it will take collaboration at the local level to get tiny homes to catch on.
“We do want to partner with our customers here in the local area, and partner with the different cities and towns and counties and work through some of these issues since they are so new zoning issues can be a major hurdle for some people.” Says Denhart
