Sunrise Yoga is offered at the Champaign Fitness Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:15-7:00am.
In the class,the origins and the basics of yoga are explained, especially if there are new members in class, and they go through a few yoga poses step-by-step.
Yoga is much more than a physical exercise as is commonly understood in the west. The term ‘yoga’ means ‘union’, in particular, it means the union of the mind-body complex that we humans are. Yoga has both an external/physical component, which are the various yogic postures, and a deeper internal/spiritual component of which the mind-body connection is only the first step, which is where we stop. In my class, we begin with a quick warm-up, then go through a series of yoga asanas step-by-step, ending with a relaxation pose at the end. Breathing is an important but often overlooked part of yoga. Folks are reminded of the proper way to breathe and to exhale/inhale at important junctures.
