Simmy Wood is a Bloomington, IL native with a knack for writing, digital media, and sharing authentic stories. As a 2020 University of Iowa graduate, she received a bachelor’s degree in Communication Studies with a minor in Theatre Arts. It was there that she took multiple mass media courses and gained interest in the field.
Growing up, Simmy found a love for almost all things creative. Outside of school, most of her free time was spent on activities like theatre, band, choir, art, photography, writing, directing and editing video projects… and scrolling through social media, of course. Simmy has always had her finger on the pulse on all things trending, which now lends itself well to her work with WCIA 3.
In 2018, Simmy was accepted into the Disney College Program. Her time in the Magic Kingdom helped her see how everyone has a story, and how rewarding it can be to contribute in a positive way. Her interest in others extended past the program and into her internship with The ExtraOrdinary Women Project in Bloomington-Normal. The project focuses on the unsung heroines of McLean County and bringing their journeys to light. Simmy joined them as a digital intern in October 2021. As a then-new organization, Simmy helped set the foundation for the tone and branding of their social media pages. She also helped conduct interviews with the honorees and wrote up their stories for local publication.
Simmy still enjoys participating in theatrical productions as a passionate hobby. She even worked as a scare actor at Universal Orlando’s Halloween Horror Nights! Now, she is glad to be back in central Illinois, combining her love of storytelling and digital media as a producer of digital content at WCIA 3.
